At this point, the fact that Helldivers 2 is actually getting its long-rumored third faction – Illuminate from the first game – feels like something we’ve been talking about for years. However, there is now new hope, in the form of a Steam deposit update for the game with the literal title ‘gameplay_illuminates’.
No, I’m not arguing with you. It seems like Arrowhead, for whatever reason, has gone with something as potentially literal as Democracy Space Station in its name for what it did to the game earlier today, which obviously fuels speculation about the guys we all thought were could emerge in the Galactic War. around the time Meridia got spaghetti and at a few points afterward.

As noted by astute Helldivers 2 subreddit user Dangerous-Return5937, according to SteamDB, Helldivers 2 received a depot update earlier today that’s literally called “gameplay_illuminates.” There’s no more information to glean about what this update actually means – whether it announces the arrival of the Illuminati that the title suggests, or when they can actually be deployed in the game.
Just the name, in a place where anyone with an internet connection can find it, which means it’s technically not even a leak, depending on how you classify such things. Naturally, the players are divided on what to think. Those who want to believe get excited, while others take a wait-and-see attitude, and some are simply confused.
As some in the latter camp have noted, it seems strange that Arrowhead – if it is the Illuminate – would decide to give it such an obvious name. While it has added other recent updates to titles like “studio_playtest” and “gameplay_worlds”, it has also made some updates under names like “mimosa”, “orion” and “wushu” that are much less likely to fuel potentially unnecessary speculation from players.
As one HD2 subreddit moderator puts it, “Arrowhead is at least asking for it by giving the depot update that title.” Regardless, some people are still convinced that it will be the studio fooling them, rather than making a mistake. “I can’t wait until it’s an update on the lighting in the gameplay and everyone gets fooled,” one person wrote.
For now, it seems wise not to get too excited, as even if this is about those Illuminated ones, there’s no guarantee that this means they’ll arrive properly in the near future, but be sure to let us know what you think of this strangeness. below!
