The Cleveland Browns have liked what they’ve seen so far from veteran quarterback Jameis Winston since he took over the starting job after Deshaun Watson’s injury.
Winston has played good football and has led the Browns to a 2-2 record.
Looking ahead to the future, Cleveland will have a decision to make at quarterback. Will they give Watson another chance now that he still has two years left under a big-money contract? Or do they keep Winston around and let him start or draft a starting quarterback?
Those are big questions the Browns will have to answer this season.
NFL analyst Chris Easterling believes he thinks Cleveland should consider re-signing Winston and moving him forward.
“I definitely think they should consider him. It comes down to money, and you have to remember where they are with the hat… If you can make a financial deal that makes sense, I absolutely think you should bring him back.”
So far this season, Winston has played in nine games, but only started in four of those games. He has completed 62.2 percent of his pass attempts for 1,266 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has 46 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Obviously those numbers are good enough to win football matches. The question is: can he be consistent every week?
At age thirty, Winston could have at least another four or five years left in him. If the Browns believe in his ability to be a starter, why wouldn’t they want to re-sign him and use their first-round pick in another area of need?
It will be very interesting to see what Andrew Berry and the Cleveland front office decide to do. They can’t afford to miss another quarterback decision.
That said, Winston’s level of play has him in the conversation of him being an option for the future. He will continue to play to prove himself and earn the opportunity to continue beyond this season.
